Tenrikyo churches generally only hold one “main” service per month. However, different churches hold their monthly service on different dates. Taiheiyo Church holds its monthly service at 9am on second Sundays.
The church system in Tenrikyo is organized like a tree. Tenrikyo Church Headquarters is located in Tenri City (named after the church), in central Japan, and represents the trunk of the tree.
Under Church Headquarters, there are some 250 directly supervised “Grand Churches” located throughout Japan. These would represent the primary branches of the tree. Taiheiyo Church falls under Shuto Grand Church.
Below the Grand Churches, there are about 17,000 lower churches distributed throughout the world. There may be several layers of lower churches under the Grand Church, so these would represent secondary branches & leaves of the tree in our metaphor. Taiheiyo Church is one of about 125 lower churches that belong to Shuto Grand Church.
In Hawaii, there are close to 40 Tenrikyo churches & they fall under different Grand Churches, depending on the lineage of their first generation missionaries. In order to unify the members from the various Grand Churches, a regional church was established: Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters of Hawaii (aka, Hawaii Dendocho).
Today was the day that Hawaii Dendocho held its monthly service (9am on 3rd Sundays). It was a lovely day for a service – sunny & breezy.
