Otsutome – Daily Service

This is a “singable” English version of the daily service prayer.  The daily service is actually performed twice each day, once at sunrise and again at sunset.  Through the daily services, we thank God for the use and functioning of our bodies, and to pray for the world to settle in peace through the purification of our minds.

Evilness we sweep away and save all we pray to You, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto

Part I is repeated 21 times. In this prayer, we ask for salvation using God as the “broom” to sweep away evil from our hearts & minds. “Evilness” here refers not to evil spirits or demons, but to our own self-centered imagination that is the root cause of all illness, troubles and suffering. The evil we sweep away are the 8 mental dusts: miserliness, covetousness, hatred, self-love, grudge bearing, anger, greed, and arrogance.

Just a word to you, what God is saying, hear and believe

Anything mistaken will never be conveyed

From the universe, earth and heaven are represented in

Man & wife’s creation, together they appeared

This is the way the world was first begun

Namu, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto

Part II is sung just once. This prayer concisely explains the Origin of humankind, and the truth of oneness-in-two. God, exemplified as Tsuki (moon/sky), and as Hi (sun/earth), created the first couple, where masculine and feminine characteristics complemented each other in unity. God the Parent, is both Father and Mother, and is both the heavens and the earth; the moon and the sun. In fact, the entire universe is the body of God, and the providence of two opposites joining as one is a fundamental law of nature, taught in Tenrikyo. To utter “Na-mu” is the same thing: Husband-wife = two individuals forming one couple.

Evilness we sweep away and hasten salvation; when one and all are purified, the Kanrodai

Part III is repeated in three sets of three, for a total of nine times. This prayer also asks for God’s help to sweep away evil (self-centered) thoughts from the minds of humankind – hastening world salvation by purifying the minds of everyone; thereupon we shall achieve the Joyous Life World through the realization of the Kanrodai, which is the Stand to receive the Heavenly Dew, i.e., the elixir of life.
